Stage 2: Sound Recognition

Goal: Teach the dog to recognize and respond to target sounds.

Covers:

• Selecting key sounds for the dog to alert to (doorbell, smoke alarm, phone, timer, etc.).

• Playing sounds in a controlled environment and rewarding attention.

• Pairing sound with a specific cue or behavior (e.g., look at handler, touch paw).

• Gradually increasing volume and distance of sounds.

• Ensuring the dog distinguishes target sounds from background noise.
